TO WIN THE LOTTERY...

[Please note that I really dislike jokes with a racist flavour to them... I thought, however, this one here was rather pleasantly innocuous enough and I decided to make an exception just for this once... ]

lottery /L@-tıri/ veya /L@T-ri/ = piyango... racist /REY-şist/ = ırkçı.. (race= 1. yarış; 2. ırk)... flavour /FLEY-vı/ = lezzet, çeşni, koku, rayiha... "to them" = Bu yapıyı eklemesem de fazla birşey değişmezdi: bir tür pekiştirici anlatım.. Örneklemek için kullandım: Tekili "to it"; 3. şahıs kullanımı dışında bir örnek düşünemiyorum... innocuous /i-N@-kıyıs/ = zararsız, masum (=gücendirici veya küfür niteliğinde değil) (harmless, inoffensive) ... just for this once = sadece bu seferlik, yalnız bu kez...

A Jewish guy called Jacob finds himself in dire trouble. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He goes into the synagogue and begins to pray:

"God, please help me, I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well, please let me win the lottery".

dire /DAYR/ = 1. ürkütücü, tehlikeli; 2. sıkıntılı, zor... (gelmiş geçmiş en iyi müzik gruplarından "DIRE STRAITS" den çağrıştırınız)... STRAIT = boğaz, deniz geçidi... Bu sözcüğü, "doğru, büklümsüz" anlamına gelen STRAIGHT ile karıştırmayınız. Ancak ikisinin de okuşu aynı... to go bust = İflas etmek... desperate /DES-pırit/ = 1. çaresiz; 2. çaresizlikten herşeyi yapacak hale gelmiş... Meksikalı haydutlara boşuna DESPERADOS denmiyor!... synagogue /Sİ-nıgoug/ = sinagog...

Lottery night comes and somebody else wins it. Jacob goes back to the synagogue to pray:

"God, please let me win the lottery, I've lost my business and my house; and I'm going to lose my car as well".

to pray = dua etmek...

Lottery night comes and Jacob still has no luck!! He runs back to the synagogue:

"My God, why have you forsaken me?? I've lost my business, my house, my car and my wife and children are starving. I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. Why won't you just let me win the lottery this one time so I can get my life back in order???".

Why have you forsaken me? = Hz. İsa'nın son sözlerine gönderme: "Neden beni terkettin? Neden kötü kaderimle yüzyüze bıraktın?"... to starve = açlık çekmek, kıtlık çekmek... Why won't you ------- = "Neden --------memekte direniyorsun" şeklinde vurgulu bir anlatım... this one time = bu seferliğine.. . get / put my life back in order = hayatımı yeniden düzene sokmak...

Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open and Jacob is confronted by the voice of GOD himself:

"JACOB, MEET ME HALF WAY ON THIS ONE, BUY A DAMN TICKET !!"

blinding = "gözleri kör eden"... flash of light = ışık çakması, ani ışık demeti... heavens = (burada) gökler, sema, göksema, tanrı katı... to be confronted by = yüzyüze gelmek, karşı karşıya kalmak (çoğunlukla, meydan okuyan bir şeyle)... MEET ME HALF WAY = Benimle yarıyolda buluş; biraz da sen fedakarlık yap... on this one = bu seferlik, bu defa ("bu olayda" kavramından). ..
