PRAXIS II (PLT) : Moral Development: Kohlberg Lawrence : Text and Video
Moral Development: Kohlberg
Theory:
Children pass through 3 levels (6 stages) as they develop their moral reasoning. Stage I focuses on children following their self-interests, Stage II emphasizes the role of family & community, and Stage III is based on ethical principles. While ages are not established, most children are in the early part of Level II by age 9-10 & fewer than 25% individuals reach Level III (Slavin, 2000).
Application:
Young children may focus on their own needs, "As long as I don’t get caught, I’ll take the cookie." Teachers should explain the importance/need of consequences. As children mature, they take on the rules of the community. Teachers need to allow students to assist in making classroom rules & consequences.
