My Learning Philosophy Principles:
1. Learning is an on going process that never rests. 2. Everyone learns in his or her own unique way. 3. The learning process can be greatly facilitated through hands-on and real world experiences. 4. Students learn best through activities that allow them to interact with others and exchange ideas. 5. Learning is facilitated if the students are cooperative and supportive of each other. I feel that the process of learning is something that never stops at any place or time. We begin learning as soon as we are born and never stop until we die. Students are able to learn in the class, at home, on the bus, or in the cafeteria. The only thing that changes in all these circumstances is what the students are learning. In the class, the student learns what the teacher is presenting to him or her. At home, the student learns what his or her parents or siblings are teaching him or her. In the cafeteria and the bus, the student usually learns what that student’s friends are presenting to him or her. Basically, we are constantly taking in and processing new information, which in essence is learning. So as long as people are being presented with information they are able to learn. As teachers, we need to understand this so that we can make arrangements to maximize the amount of information that the students are learning. I believe every person learns in his or her own way. This refers to how a person processes the information that is given to them. When provided with information we use it and store it in different ways. These ways of storing and using information are learned from experiences that we have had and the way we were brought up by our parents. Some people are able to learn better by listening to either someone talk or some form of an audio presentation. While other people learn better when they are watching a movie or play. Students need to figure out which way works for them so that they can organize how they study material. By understanding that all of his or her students learn in different ways, a teacher can diversify his or her teaching so that all the learning styles of all the students are taken into account. I also beleive learning is facilitated through the use of hands-on and experiential learning. When a student is learning something, it always helps to have a special link to that knowledge. One way of giving the student a link is by allowing the student to experience what he or she is learning. By taking field trips, the student is able see how this knowledge is used in the real world. If a field trip is not available, then by bringing objects into the classroom that pertain to the topic it will give the student something to link the knowledge to. If things are brought into the class and it is possible, then the students should be allowed to handle the objects to give a stronger link to the object and the idea. The student will be able to remember this experience or this link and hopefully be able to connect it with what they are trying to learn. Finally, I believe that my teaching and learning philosophy will help me to arrange my class in such a way that my students can benefit the most from my class. Each one, of my principles, gives me ways that the students’ learning processes can be enhanced and therefore can be more educational for them. Guests cannot see links in the messages.
