Turkey has rejected Israeli criticism of its decision to meet a delegation of the Palestinian militant group, Hamas.
Israeli spokesman Ranaan Gissin had compared the move to Israel inviting separatist Kurdish rebels for talks and said it could damage bilateral ties.

However, the Turkish foreign ministry described the comparison as "completely groundless and wrong".

Turkish officials have urged Hamas to renounce violence and adopt a conciliatory attitude towards Israel.

The Hamas delegation, led by the Islamist group's exiled political leader, Khaled Meshaal, said it would take the advice seriously.

'Unfortunate'

Turkey said Mr Gissin's remarks were "unfortunate".

India has detected its first cases of the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain in western Maharashtra state.
Dr HK Pradhan of High Security Animal Disease Laboratory said tests had confirmed the virus in dead chickens.

The health ministry said that though no human cases had been detected so far, some people were being tested for the disease.

The H5N1 strain has killed at least 90 people since early 2003, mostly in south-east Asia.

Germany has confirmed that two swans found dead in the north of the country had the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus.
The birds were found on the island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea, off Germany.

Austria has also confirmed its first cases of bird flu, in two dead swans. Sweden and Denmark have ordered poultry to be kept indoors as a precaution.

The United Nations food agency has urged governments in Western Europe not to panic, but warned the virus could spread further when birds migrate.

As many as 1,800 people are missing after a massive mudslide buried a remote village in the southern Philippine island of Leyte. One day after a rain-soaked mountain turned into a deadly wall of mud, only 56 of the village's 1,875 residents had been found alive, Leyte's provincial governor, Rosette Lerias, said today. Meanwhile, 11 villages have been evacuated as officials fear a repeat of the disaster.
