Essay no 3
In some classes courses are graded based solely on exams, while in other classes, grades are based on class participation than on exams. Which type of grading do you prefer? Use specific reasons to support your response.
During time, the learning system changed significantly, so did the way in which professors are grading their students. Nowadays, we can see in some classes that grades are based considerably on exams, while in others, the students’ participation on classes is more important than on exams.
Each professor may decide which of the two alternatives should be taked into account when grading their students. They establish accurate percents which will be part of the grades and usually they communicate these percents to their students in the first class of each semester.
Each of these two possibilities for grading the students may be important and relevant in every professor’s perspective.
In my oppinion the best alternative to be taken into consideration when computing grades would be to use an equal part from both methods, meaning 50% to be represented by the students’ activity on classes and the other 50% by the students participation on exams. I have some reasons for choosing this approach and I will try to explain in the following rows why do I believe so.
First of all, I think the participation on classes is important for students, this stimulates them to study, read and be informed every day, because only in this way they will be able to give some good responses on classes, while receiving admiration from both their professors and their colleagues.
But why do I think that participation should be 50% and not more? Because some students may be shy, talking in front of the class, while everybody is staring at them is maybe not their best quality. In this situation, they will be always unconfortable and frustrated, not being able to receive a good mark for their participation on class, while the others that have no problem with speaking loud and clear in front of their class will obtain very good marks.
The other reason would be the time students may have for their studying and preparation for each course. We should not forget that nowadays there are more and more study programs which must be paid by the students. These fees may vary from a small amount of money to a considerable amount of money. Students usually do not have so much money to pay the school, so they must find a job and work. They usually chose part-time jobs, which require between 3 and 5 hours per day. But this is enough for them not to be able to attend all the classes, not to have a considerable participation on classes like the other students and in the end not to have a good final mark.
I think that taking these two important reasons into account when grading their students, professors would give them the chance to obtain a mark that better express their work and abilities.
Maybe a student is very good at speaking, at giving very good responses on classes, but since he has to work, he cannot attend all the classes, so he will have a bad mark at the participation on classes. But since this percentage is not very high, he will have the opportunity to study hard for the exam and get a good mark, which will be affected by the participation on classes, but it will not have a significant impact like it would have had when the participation on classes would have been for example 70%.
