MIRROR ON THE WALL

Legend has it that there is a bar in New York where, in the Ladies Room, there is a very special mirror. If one stands in front of the mirror and tells the truth, one is granted a wish. However, if one tells a lie, then *POOF* -- you are instantly swallowed up by the mirror, never to be seen again.

"Legend has it that..." = "Rivayet odur ki..." [legend = efsane]... to grant a wish = 1. "dile benden ne dilersen" demek... [Fakat, 2. "His wish was granted." = Dileði yerine geldi/getirildi] ... to swallow = yutmak [burada, edilgen yapý] -- ["up" bir pekiþtirici/kuvvetle ndirici ve �ok daha deyiþsel (idiomatik) bir kullaným]... never to be seen again = bir daha asla geri gelmemek (=g�r�nmemek) �zere...

A redhead of questionable looks walks into the Ladies Room and stands before the mirror and says, "I think I'm the most beautiful woman in the world." *POOF* The mirror swallows her.

of questionable looks = pek de g�zel olmayan... Peki neden burada "swallow up" kullanmadýk? Bknz. bazý durumlarda fazla ince sorulara dalmak yalnýzca baþýnýzý aðrýtýr: Anadil konuþanlarýn "ritim" duygusunu olduðu gibi kabul ve taklit etmek en iyi yoldur.

Next, a rather large brunette stands before the mirror and says, "I think I think I'm the sexiest woman alive! *POOF* The mirror swallows her.

Then an absolutely gorgeous blonde comes in and stands before the mirror; she studies herself in a trance; and no sooner than she begins, "I think..." -- *POOF* and she's gone.

absolutely gorgeous = tam anlamýyla þahane... studies herself = kendisini (uzun uzun) inceler... no sooner than she begins = daha baþlar baþlamaz... she's gone = u�tu!!! gitti!!! yok oldu!!!

NOT:

"Brunette" s�zc�ð�, bizdeki s�zl�klerde "esmer" s�zc�ð� ile karþýlanýyor. Bence bu yanlýþ. �ncelikle, farklý coðrafyalarýn ten rengi anlayýþýnýn birbirini tam tutmamasý doðaldýr. Ýngilizce, "blonde, redhead, brunette, rather dark, dark, dark-skinned, black" tanýmlamasý ile mutlu g�r�n�yor, ama onlarda da "brunette" kategorisi "white/beyaz" ve "coloured/beyaz olmayan" sýnýflamasýnýn belirsiz bir karýþýmý. Koyu g�z ve sa� rengi belirleyici kabul edilebilir. Buna g�re, iki dilin "kýzýl sa�lý" ve "sarýþýn" kavramlarý birbirini az�ok tutuyor. Fakat bizdeki "beyaz tenli (ama koyu g�z ve sa� rengi), kumral (sarýþýnýmsý fakat koyu g�z ve sa� rengi), esmer, koyu tenli" gibi tanýmlar "brunette -- dark-skinned" kayýcý �l�eði ile birebir �akýþmýyor.
